Three principles of life: Doshas
Dosha is a central term in Ayurveda, which comes from Sanskrit and means “error”, but can be translated as “that which can cause problems”. The three doshas of the tridosa teaching that characterize Brahmanic medicine – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha -. Thus, doshas give people their constitutions and regulate their physical and mental functions. According to this, every human being is born with a mixture of doshas (Prakriti) that is unique to him. This is determined by the constitution of the parents, the time of conception, and other factors.
The constitution fixed at birth (Prakriti) represents the individual norm of a balanced state for the respective person. One of the three doshas can predominate, for example with a Vata constitution. It is only when the balance of the doshas becomes imbalanced relative to the constitution, which can happen through bad habits, improper diet, overwork, etc., that an unnatural, potentially pathogenic state (Vikriti) arises and one becomes vulnerable.
Ayurveda strives to maintain the state of Prakriti. So, in the case of illness, this holistic medicine treats the illness about the constitution or an imbalanced dosha in such a way that the state of individual balance is restored.
